I’m sure many of you have heard this phrase at some point in your life; visualize and it will materialize. Do you believe that’s possible? I want to tell you that it is.
I made a vision board about 5 years ago and at the time I remember just grabbing as many magazines and quotes as possible and glueing it all over the page. And many of the things I added on my board have come to fruition. But there is an even better way which I recently learned.
Recently, I participated in a vision board workshop. The person hosting the event is a Life Coach who has been coaching for over 22 years. Since I’m always curious to learn how others apply their knowledge and share it this was a definite yes for me to attend.
Here are some of my notes from the workshop:
3 Questions to answer before you create a vision board:
Answering the questions below will make your vision board crystal clear and easier to narrow down as to what pictures you want to see on your board.
#1 Who are you?
- What excites you the most?
- What makes your life feel joyful and fulfilled?
- Who is important to you?
- What feelings do you want to exude naturally and effortlessly?
- What are some skills or ways of being that come naturally to you?
#2 What are some goals/feelings that you want to achieve over the next 12 months?
* this was new to me. I didn’t realize it’s actually a good thing to make them once a year. Kind of makes you feel less overwhelmed about what to create for your life on a board :). I used to think it was something 3-10 years out, and it could be if you want it to but it’s nice to hone in on your year and simplify.
Try to come up 5-10 things that you want to have this year.
Remember, these are specific to you. Not everyone is going to have the same vision so do not let anyone or anything stop you from feeling you cannot achieve these goals or feelings.
#3 What is that big hairy audacious dream you are longing for?
What is the one thing in your life that you have always wanted to do and would completely fulfil you? Write that out. Make it crystal clear what that is if nothing could get in your way (including yourself!)
After you have written those goals out, you’re ready to get started.
Here is my 6 steps to making your visions a reality:
#1 Get some pictures of yourself and those who are most important to you in your life
#2 Spend some time searching the topics that you wrote about in your questions in magazines and over the internet and get printing and cutting!
#3 Pick at least 3 to 5 quotes or words you want to read on your board every day.
#4 Decide how you will lay out your vision board. A good example is to set a photo of yourself in the middle and think of what is important to you in your life. Think of a whole pie; there are 8 slices in one pie and you can view your life in 8 areas.
Here’s an example of one way to look at the slices in your life:
#5 Give yourself a timeline of 2 weeks to complete your board. Make sure you alot a good chunk of time for the preparation of photos and then deciding where you want them to go on your board.
#6 Put your board somewhere you will see it everyday. The more you focus on what you want you will subconsciously choose to move yourself in that direction. That’s magic!!
That’s it! I hope this helps you start a vision board as it was a very helpful process for me. Remember, there is no right way to make a vision board!
